Charting a Course for Maritime Innovation
We mobilize federal action to support the maritime energy transition.
Our Purpose
Forging a U.S.‑driven Sustainable Maritime Future
The Sustainable Maritime Coalition is the first coalition focused on the intersection of energy and the maritime industry to directly engage the United States federal government, leveraging the analysis of key stakeholders and partners to accelerate the development and deployment of the infrastructure and fuels that will enable the modernization of the maritime sector.
We advocate for investments, incentives, and innovation to position the United States at the forefront of the global maritime energy transition.
The Sustainable Maritime Coalition comprises maritime industry stakeholders, fuel developers, and technology experts committed to align the United States to develop the technologies, fuels and infrastructure development needed to have an enduring maritime economy.

Why Now?
It’s Time for Action, at Sea and Onshore
↓
The maritime industry makes the global economy possible, and it is undergoing a once-in-a-century energy transition. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set industry-wide goals to enable more widespread use and mandatory adoption of alternative clean fuels, with a target of a clean fuels adoption and other efficiency improvements by 2050. It is estimated that more than $3 trillion in global investment is needed to enable this global transformation.
While other countries make major investments in maritime fuels, vessels, and port infrastructure to meet this aggressive timeline, the United States maritime sector remains dramatically underfunded relative to other transportation sectors like aviation and highway transport. Federal support is critical to prepare our ports and fleet for the future.
Policy priorities

-
4
Help ports bunker and distribute fuels of the future.
What We Do
Leading the Federal Conversation
Many groups focus on policy and technology pathways for the maritime industry. The Sustainable Maritime Coalition is the only nonpartisan organization focused on federal action.
Our mission is to work with the Executive Branch and Congress to advocate for funding and legislative action to support the modernization of the maritime industry and the infrastructure serving it through efficiency, new fuel and energy sources, and technology integration.
